Abstract

Culture is such an important part of life and yet, how much of it has been lost over generations? There are studies that show second generation immigrants tend to distance themselves from their cultures, and by the time third or fourth generations are born, there may be no chance left to connect with their heritage. Culture Shock aims to remediate this by allowing users to upload culturally significant information to preserve their heritage, in a way that facilitates community and interaction between users. This allows them to preserve information as well as learn from other people. Culture Shock is a web application that allows users to upload Wiki articles and interact with articles that other users have posted. This is significant because the Wiki component allows for important knowledge like recipes and ceremonies to be permanently preserved in writing, preventing generational information loss, thus preserving crucial heritage.
