Abstract

AlertMap is a web application that shows users where reported incidents are occurring in real time via GPS. This application will allow users to see where they are in relation to the incidents and will let them know which areas to avoid or how to maneuver around them in order to get to their destination. It will pull the data from the UC Alerts notifications and display the location and incident description on a map in real-time. In turn, this will allow users new to the area to become familiar with the campus and its surroundings, while staying safe. As stated, the user will be tracked via GPS so location services will need to be enabled. In summary, UC Alerts sends out text and email messages to students who are subscribed to them detailing where events on and around campus are happening. While helpful, new students that are unfamiliar with the area may invertedly wander into the locations where active events are occurring which could result in injury. To remedy this issue, we plan to create a web application that will show users their current location on a GPS map, the location of active events and display visually via color how long the alert has been active for. For those subscribed to the alerts, a link to the site will be provided in both email and text notifications
