Abstract

Traffic light failure continues to pose serious safety issues for drivers when navigating the intersection. The study seeks to understand how drivers can safely cross intersections when there is a failed traffic signal. A systematic literature methodology was utilized to search IEEE electronic database and retrieved a total of 32 articles but only 2 articles were eligible and reviewed. The study indicates Police cabins or Cops, Signboards, Telephone Booths, and Smart Fault Detection traffic lights as measures to address issues of traffic light failure. Though the observed interventions shows some relevance, they couldn’t directly address drivers’ safety concerns when navigate intersections during traffic light outages. Addressing heighten safety issues during traffic light outage would require design that is user centered. This study would be useful for traffic light authorities, traffic engineers, and researchers to understand interventions that are currently being used and to guide towards intervention development that would help drivers navigate failed or malfunctioning signal intersection.
