Abstract

KitchenSync was developed as a web based kitchen inventory and meal planning application designed to reduce household food waste and improve grocery management efficiency. The project addressed research showing that approximately 30 to 40 percent of the United States food supply is lost or wasted annually. The system allowed users to track food inventory using barcode scanning and manual entry, receive expiration reminders, and generate recipe recommendations based on available ingredients. The application was built using a modern web technology stack that included Next.js, Supabase, and third party data APIs. Usability testing and simulated usage scenarios were conducted to evaluate system effectiveness and user interaction workflows. Results demonstrated improved inventory visibility and reduced manual tracking effort. The project highlighted how user centered design and accessible web technologies could support sustainable consumption behaviors and reduce preventable household food waste.
