Abstract

This systematic literature review investigates the use of privacy nudges in prototype interventions designed to enhance user situation awareness in online environments. We analyzed 75 studies to identify common nudge types, implementation strategies, targeted privacy risks, and their impact on different phases of situational awareness. Our findings reveal a prevalence of visual and informational nudges aimed at improving decision-making and data-sharing awareness, primarily targeting the perception phase. However, less intrusive nudging techniques and interventions directly addressing privacy risks remain under-explored. We discuss the implications of these findings for future research and practice, emphasizing the need for tailored nudges that empower users and foster privacy-conscious behaviors in diverse online contexts. This review contributes to the growing body of knowledge on privacy nudges and offers valuable insights for researchers and practitioners seeking to design effective privacy interventions.
