Abstract

According to a report released by American health insurer Cigna in 2020, around 60% of Americans reported feeling lonely or isolated. Feelings of loneliness have only grown since then due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many were isolated from family and friends, only able to communicate with them through digital means. If left untreated, pervasive loneliness can have long-term effects on an individual's health. HangoutVR (HoVR) is an online virtual world platform that connects players to a shared virtual space where they may interact and chat with one another. Within the platform, players are also given the ability to join mini-games that are designed to entertain and connect individuals. Having the ability to interact with others in a virtual space over the internet makes socialization accessible to those at home. HangoutVR provides a platform for these individuals to connect in a safe, fun, and interactive environment.
